MLS Cup Playoffs 2026: bracket format, schedule and key dates

The 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs start on Wednesday, Nov. 18 with the Wild Card matches, and the final, MLS Cup, is on Friday, Dec. 18. Eighteen teams qualify, the top nine in each conference, and the bracket will only be set after Decision Day on Saturday, Nov. 7, when all clubs play the last round of the regular season.

Until then, seeding can still change. The live picture is on the MLS standings page, and every Decision Day kickoff and score will be on the MLS hub.

All dates come from MLS, which added the Round One dates on Oct. 7.

How does the 2026 MLS playoff format work?

MLS has 30 clubs, and each plays 34 regular-season games. The top nine in each conference reach the postseason:

  • Seeds 1 to 7 qualify directly for Round One.
  • Seeds 8 and 9 play a single Wild Card match, hosted by the No. 8 seed.
  • The Wild Card winner faces the No. 1 seed in Round One.

That leaves eight teams per conference in Round One. Four per conference advance to the Conference Semifinals, then one per conference reaches MLS Cup.

How does the best-of-3 Round One work?

Round One is a best-of-3 series, and the first team to win two matches goes through. The format is home-away-home: the higher seed hosts Game 1, the lower seed hosts Game 2, and the higher seed hosts Game 3 if the series is level at one win each.

Each match has a winner. If a Round One game is tied after 90 minutes, there is no extra time; it goes straight to penalties, and the shootout winner takes the win in the series.

What happens if a game is tied in the later rounds?

The rules change after Round One:

  • Wild Card and Round One: no extra time, straight to a penalty shootout.
  • Conference Semifinals, Conference Finals and MLS Cup: two full 15-minute periods of extra time, then penalties if still level.

All rounds after Round One are single elimination.

Who hosts each round?

The Wild Card match and the Conference Semifinals are hosted by the higher seed. The Conference Finals are also hosted by the higher seed. MLS Cup goes to the finalist with the better regular-season record, so a team that finishes top of its conference can earn home field all the way to the final.

How many games does it take to win MLS Cup?

It depends on where a team finishes. A club seeded 1 to 7 skips the Wild Card round, so it needs two wins in Round One (two or three games), then single wins in the Conference Semifinal, the Conference Final and MLS Cup. That is five or six playoff games.

A club seeded 8 or 9 has one more step. It must first win the Wild Card match, then beat the No. 1 seed in a best-of-3 series, so the champion from that spot would play six or seven games. That extra game, plus the higher seed's home advantage in Game 1 and Game 3, is why the last weeks of the regular season matter so much.

What should I watch on Decision Day?

Decision Day on Nov. 7 settles every seed, including who lands in the 8 vs 9 Wild Card games and who gets the No. 1 seeds' home advantage. Among the scheduled games, Nashville SC face FC Cincinnati; follow it on the Nashville SC team page. Once the final whistle blows on every game, the 18-team bracket is locked and the Wild Card pairings for Nov. 18 are known.
