Jalen Duren is staying in Detroit. The 22-year-old center accepted the Pistons' offer of $200 million over five years, all of it guaranteed, late on Thursday, Oct. 1, shortly before the deadline to accept Detroit's one-year qualifying offer, according to ESPN. His agent, Chafie Fields, announced the agreement through ESPN's Shams Charania, and the deal closed a restricted free agency that had dragged on for four months.

What are the terms of Jalen Duren's new contract?

Detail Figure
Length 5 years
Total value $200 million
Guarantee Fully guaranteed
Alternative he turned down One-year qualifying offer worth $9.6 million
Earlier offers reported over the summer $170 million to $190 million

The $200 million figure was not new. ESPN reported that Detroit had put the same five-year offer on the table about two weeks earlier and Duren had not signed it. Had he signed the qualifying offer, he could have hit unrestricted free agency in 2027, a route that, per ESPN, no All-Star or All-NBA player has ever taken.

Why did the Pistons negotiation take so long?

Money was only part of it. Charania reported that Duren's camp felt the process had been disrespectful, especially when compared with the five-year, $155 million rookie-scale extension Detroit had already agreed with forward Ausar Thompson. Duren also objected to weight clauses that appeared in some of the team's earlier proposals.

Because nothing was signed, Duren skipped media day and missed the first practices of training camp. The Pistons, for their part, never entertained sign-and-trade ideas and kept saying in public that he was part of their long-term plan.

What did Duren say after signing?

At his first news conference on Sunday, Oct. 4, with Trajan Langdon, the team's head of basketball operations, beside him, Duren said he hopes to spend the rest of his career in Detroit. He described the city as his full-time home and admitted the talks went on longer than either side expected. As The Athletic reported on NBA.com, he went further and said he wants to be "a Detroit Piston for life."

He also addressed what he called false narratives that grew during his silence over the summer, insisting they did not come from him. Duren called last season a mix of his best and worst moments as a pro and said he had channeled the frustration of the playoffs into work over the offseason.

Coach J.B. Bickerstaff said he did not sense any resentment between Duren and the group and that the staff would take time to get him properly ready.

How did Duren play last season?

The regular season was the best of his career. Over 70 games Duren put up 19.5 points per night with 10.5 boards and 65% shooting from the field. He earned a first All-Star selection and a spot on the All-NBA third team as Detroit finished first in the Eastern Conference. The playoffs went the other way: his scoring fell to roughly 10 points a game over 14 postseason games, and the Pistons lost Game 7 of the East semifinals to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

With Duren and Thompson now locked in alongside Cade Cunningham, Detroit has its young core under contract for the long term. The Pistons opened the preseason on Monday, Oct. 5, at home against the Phoenix Suns.
